Best late night spot:Ohio State students share where they like to study and why

With the semester wrapping up and finals taking place, Ohio State students shared where they like to study late at night and why.

When asked about her reasonings behind her place to study, first-year in chemistry, Grace Stewart, said she prefers Thompson Library.

“I think it is a really pretty environment so it just makes me more productive and kind of romanticizes studying in a way,” Stewart said.

The path of tradition: students take on Ohio State's annual Rivalry Run

Kicking off Rivalry Week, Ohio State students took part in a race to get their blood pumping and their Buckeye spirits flowing in anticipation for one of the biggest football games of the season.

Held on Nov. 24, Block O hosted its annual Rivalry Run, a tradition that began in 2019, featuring a one mile and three mile race around campus starting at 7:34 p.m., said second-year in math engineering and program director for Block O, Cate Cunningham.

“I hope it’s still here in years to come and officially is one of those deep Ohio State traditions that we have so many of,” Cunningham said.

Local 17-year-old bagpiper entertains crowds at Ohio State football tailgates

Brody Alexander, a 17-year-old local bagpiper, entertains crowds at Ohio State football tailgates.

Playing the bagpipes for over ten years, Alexander said one of his favorite aspects of performing at tailgates is the excitement he receives from surprised fans.

“I’ve always loved Ohio State, I’ve been a huge fan my whole life, and I knew that they have the craziest fans,” Alexander said. “So, what can make them even crazier than the bagpipes? Like, you don’t ever see that.”

Ohio State students reflect on their feelings towards the recent presidential election

With the presidential election taking place just over two weeks ago, The Lantern took to the Oval to ask Ohio State students what impacted their vote and how their feelings towards the outcome.

With former President Donald Trump winning the 2024 presidential election Lucy Weeks, a fourth-year in sport industry, said the economy — particularly with finding a job after college — was a large factor in her opinions towards the election.

“Graduating in May, I’m nervous that I won’t get a job and if I don’t, I need to be able to sustain and provide for myself in a way, and how I’m providing now — it’s kind of rough,” Weeks said.

Why Ohio State students casted their ballots in the 2024 election

As students cast their ballots at the Ohio Union Nov. 5, they reflect on why they decided to vote in the 2024 election.

Polling took place in the Archie M. Griffin Grand Ballroom with students across campus motivated by various political and social issues they felt impacted them directly according to Sydney Ball, a fourth-year in logistics and a member of Ohio Student Action.

“We’re out here supporting the Ohio Supreme Court,” Ball said. “There are three seats up for reelection, so, that is really important because if we have control of the Supreme Court, we can protect Roe v. Wade and other important decisions."

The Pilipino Student Association Hosts Annual Culture Show, "Barrio".

The Pilipino Student Association hosted their annual culture show “Barrio”, on-campus Saturday in the Ohio Union.

For each showing association choses a different theme, with this years being “Walang Hiya”, which means “without shame”, said second-year in aviation engineering and Kapatid director for PSA, Ram Joaquin De Vera.

De Vera said despite the fact that the term is typically used with a negative connotation in the Philippines, their organization wanted to give the phrase a new meaning.

“I think what we’re trying to do this year is show that you can live with no shame and just be unapologetically who you are,” De Vera said.

Voting organizations urge students to vote in upcoming elections.

Ohio voting organizations took to Ohio State's campus to encourage students to register and vote in preparation for upcoming elections.

With the lowest age group of registered individuals being those aged 18 to 24-years-old, focusing attention on Ohio State's campus is important to ensure that students within that range become educated on the voting process, said Redistricting Campaign Coordinator for League of Woman Voters in Ohio, Trevor Martin.

"You have a voice and we want you to use it," Martin said. "We want you to stand up. We want you to make your voices heard. Use that vote. Use that power that you have."

Silent March Through Campus Educates Students About Voting

A committee of several students from various Ohio State organizations hosted a silent march Saturday to promote voter registration and education across campus.

Titled the "March on Scarlet", the march began at 11 a.m. and emulated the 1963 March on Washington, which made similar efforts to raise awareness for voting rights, said Isaac Wilson, a fourth-year in aerospace engineering and President of NAACP OSU.

"[...] this is just a wholesome idea from a group of friends that wanted to make sure that people get out and vote," said Wilson.

Visiting Buckeye Parents Share Advice to Students and Families during Parent's Weekend.

Hosting their annual Buckeye Football and Family Tailgate, Ohio State welcomed visiting Buckeye Parents to come together and celebrate with their students.

With the tailgate falling within the dates for Parent's Weekend, we asked parents not only what advice they gave to their students that they think would be helpful to others, but also what advice they would give on how to stay in touch while students are on-campus.

"Well, I mean there's FaceTime, but I would also say give them space - I mean, it's a time where you got to have grace, because I think sometimes as parents we want to be there, we want to be in touch," Marloen Walker, a Buckeye Parent, said. "But we also gotta give them time to spread their wings."

Ohio State hosts Be Kind Food Packaging to combat food insecurity as a community

Ohio State hosted its annual Be Kind Food Packing event this past Wednesday, to address food insecurity in areas throughout the state.

Held in the Tom W. Davis gym in the RPAC at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., students, faculty, alumni and volunteers gathered to produce 350,000 meals for food insecure individuals living in Adams, Brown, Franklin, Hamilton, Highland and Montgomery counties said Julie Fox, an Associate Professor for Ohio State and member for the Department of Extensions Leadership Team.

“We’re very committed to helping healthy Ohioans and healthy communities, and so as part of that when we looked at the meals that are being packed, we thought what a nutritious blend,” Fox said. “[…] So whether they take that and they’re able to enjoy this meal with their family, their friends and their neighbors, you could also use that as kind of a prompt to have conversations you might not have had before.”

Ohio State Olympic Weightlifting Club Hosts First-Ever Fundraising Gala

The Ohio State Olympic Weightlifting Club held its first-ever Fundraising Gala Friday evening at the Heritage Golf Club.

The weightlifting club was refounded in 2021 after dissolving in the '80s, and the fundraising gala was a way to bring together former members, alumni and prominent figures in the weightlifting community.  The event featured food and drinks, various speeches from experts in their fields and a silent auction to raise money for the up-and-coming club.

Following the event, members were also invited to attend a training session with the club on Saturday.

"This event was completely planned and organized by our student members. It's just a great example of their initiative and their 'get-up and go.' I'm really blown away by the leadership and the work ethic the students in this club have shown," professor of philosophy at Ohio State and the club's adviser, Declan Smithies said. "It's a good reflection of their integrity and their commitment to the club itself."

Hospitality Management Program Hosts Inclusive Dinner Event for Families of Kids with Autism

Hospitality Listens, an event aimed at providing a free dinner event for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families, hosted its ninth annual gathering for roughly 160 people at the Center of Science and Industry Sunday evening.

Everything from the activities to the Halloween theme was planned and run by students in hospitality management to provide a fun sensory experience for kids and families that otherwise can struggle in similar settings. The goal of the event is to not only give hands-on experience for students, but to also give parents a relaxing night out with their kids.

“It's a complimentary event,” Ohio State alum and stage program emcee Sarah McOwen said. “It gives our students not only the chance to learn about how to put on an event with a little more care and attention, but it also gives families a night off where they can kind of just be served, you know, be the guest for once and have their children occupied by students who are trained to kind of handle those situations where it might not be as ordinary.”
